The Greens in Germany “have failed with their central project: the basic protection of children,” wrote Die Tageszeitung (TAZ) on July 18.
A major reform that was supposed to “lift children out of poverty” and for which the German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Women, Senior Citizens and Youth, Lisa Paus, initially demanded 5,000 jobs and 12 billion euros, has become a website. Parents should be given the opportunity to check which benefits they are entitled to.
It should be noted that it is not only the “greens” who are to blame for the failure of the basic child insurance programme. “German bureaucracy is a monster and child poverty is the failure of several generations of politicians. And the coalition partner, the SPD, was not interested in the Greens making a name for themselves on this issue.”– TAZ commentator, German journalist and writer Kersten Augustin.
The Greens once wanted to be a party for everyone. Basic provision for children should support this demand, but the project was a failure.
