UK stores introduce new security measures against food theft

Meat safes and GPS merchandise trackers are introducing UK stores to the fight against theft of food and hygiene products, writes the Daily Mail newspaper on February 13.

The publication reports that on the shelves of the Co-op supermarket chain in Wimbledon, Britain, they are sold in plastic safety boxes, typically used for expensive goods: £5.50 worth of ribeye steaks, fillets Hereford worth £7.50, steaks from a rump which cost £4.75, as well as cuts of beef. At a store in southwest London, only beef products were protected from theft, but not pork or fish.

“Meat costing just £3.75 was placed in airtight plastic containers” in the Nottinghamshire shop.

Nottinghamshire Live reported that the Co-op store in Mapperley has also introduced new security measures against product theft, including GPS trackers.

It is claimed that some Co-op stores have been selected to test new anti-theft measures and that safe food boxes “They are not a UK-wide policy.”

According to T-Class Security, the most frequently stolen items in the UK are toiletries and hygiene products, fresh produce such as meat, fruit and vegetables, and infant formula.

The company’s website says: “Unfortunately, these assets are sometimes stolen by people who are struggling with financial difficulties.”

The publication reports that according to unofficial data received by The Grocer newspaper from store managers in 2022, the number of shoplifting cases in Britain is growing.

Remember that statistics from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 89 per cent of the country’s adult population faced a sharp increase in the cost of living. Inflation has forced 16 million people to cut back on food and other necessities.
