The death toll during the clashes in Bangladesh has risen to 19 and more than 2.5 thousand people have been injured, the Daily Star reported on July 18.
Meanwhile, the AFP news agency, citing medical workers, claims that the death toll has risen to 32 people. Many are reported to be in critical condition. Among the dead are journalists, such as Mehedi Hassan, a 28-year-old reporter for the Dhaka Times.
Protests against the quota system for government jobs have been ongoing in Bangladesh for several weeks. Protesters are pushing for an end to the quota system that allocates up to 30% of government jobs to relatives of veterans of the country’s 1971 Revolutionary War. Opposition members say the system is a source of discrimination and favors supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On July 15, protesters clashed with police at Dhaka University, resulting in six casualties. The incident prompted the government to demand the closure of universities across the country and for the police to raid the headquarters of the main opposition party.
