The United States will not hesitate to take action against Iran if it poses a threat to American citizens, State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said at a briefing on July 18.
He was commenting on allegations that Iranian authorities were preparing an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump.
“We will not hesitate to take appropriate action to hold the Iranian regime accountable and ensure that we do everything necessary to protect our citizens, including former officials, and to protect our interests from the threats posed by Iran.”said Patel.
However, specific measures that might be taken were not disclosed.
Recall that on July 16, CNN reported that for several weeks, US authorities had received information that Iran was planning an assassination attempt against Trump. The Iranian mission to the UN rejected the accusations, calling them baseless and biased. The representative of the mission clarified that, despite the accusations, Tehran holds Trump responsible for the death of General Qassem Soleimani and believes that he should be brought to justice.
