Japan to force smart devices to transmit emergency messages

Japan to force smart devices to transmit emergency messages

Authorities in the Japanese city of Tsukuba will test an experiment in transmitting audio messages about natural disasters through Internet-connected household items on February 14, reports NHK television.

The experiment will involve the Japanese technology manufacturer Sharp, the Research Institute for Earth Sciences and Disaster Resilience, as well as the Tsukuba city authorities. The parties seek to obtain a system that will allow the use of equipment located in the homes of local residents to transmit information, including the need for evacuation and the possible consequences of natural disasters.

It is reported that this will be the first test of its kind in the country. To participate in the experiment, local residents were asked to submit an application, after which twice a day their smart devices will receive messages inviting them to stock up on water and fix furniture.

Based on the results of the experiment, the organizers will collect and analyze feedback from participants on delivery time and other features of the resulting system.

SRI spokesman Haruo Hayashi stated that they are participating in this experiment to obtain another mechanism for sending emergency messages. At the same time, Hironori Nakata, who is in charge of the program within Sharp Corporation, stressed that he hopes his products can address the issue of people’s safety.

Recall that during the flight of a North Korean ballistic missile over the territory of Japan in the fall of 2022, the responsible authorities issued a danger warning for the northern regions and transmitted a signal to the inhabitants of the respective territories only a minute before the object. directly crossed this area.

In addition, the current earthquake alert system in the country was criticized because after the tremors were registered, notifications were sent only to those areas where they could be felt live.

However, due to the widespread presence of high-rise buildings, the authorities decided to expand the alert zones to areas where residents can feel the tremors if they are on the upper floors.
