The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her election to a second term as President of the European Commission on Thursday, highlighting the “strong majority achieved” in the European Parliament.
According to a note sent to the Lusa agency, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election” and considered that “the significant number of votes and the increased majority achieved demonstrate that Europeans are capable of achieving important convergences when it comes to their common future.”
“It also means recognising the importance of the work done by Ursula von der Leyen and the quality of leadership with which she has led the European Union through times of great geopolitical upheaval. And it allows us to finally have hope in the ability of Europeans to face global risks and challenges,” the same note says.
