Braun-Pivet has outvoted the candidate of the left-wing New Popular Front bloc, André Chassaigne,
Macronist Yael Braun-Pivet was re-elected as president of the National Assembly on Thursday after winning a narrow margin of votes in the third round of voting, which was decided by relative majority.
Braun-Pivet won 220 votes, while communist André Chassaigne won 207 and far-right candidate Sébastien Chenu 141.
In a highly fragmented Chamber, this simple majority victory for Macronism – achieved with the support of conservative deputies – is a major setback for the left-wing coalition of the New Popular Front (NFP), which, as the force with the most seats, claims the ability to govern.
“Politicians can have a direct impact on the lives of the French. Our actions can change their lives,” she stressed moments after being re-elected from the podium of the Assembly, according to the newspaper The Figaro.
In this regard, he urged the House to “cooperate” and “seek agreements.” “I will put all my determination, all my work, into working for you, for the French,” he stressed, after several boos and applause.
Leading figures on the French left have accused Macron’s supporters of forging “alliances” (not only with right-wing parties, but also with those of National Rally leader Marine Le Pen) to ensure that Braun-Pivet has the necessary support to renew her mandate at the head of the Assembly.
In fact, Chassaigne has denounced that it was a vote “stolen” by “an unnatural alliance between Macronism and the right.” He also pointed out that this “has not allowed anything to change while the people were waiting for things to change,” he stressed. The Socialist Party, La France Insoumise, the Communist Party and the ‘Greens’ – main members of the New Popular Front – reached an agreement the day before to present the communist André Chassaigne as a unity candidate for the presidency of the Assembly. Despite this, negotiations to reach a consensus and present a candidate for prime minister remain stalled.
