Moldova is in a region where security threats exist, but citizens should not panic, Acting Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic Nicolae Popescu said on February 14 at a briefing.
He commented on Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s statement that the opposition is allegedly planning a Russian-backed coup in the country. According to him, the Moldovan authorities control the situation.
“The risks identified by the president, the destabilization attempts, the attempts to provoke violence in the country’s territory, even those coordinated from outside, are a type of risk that we have known for a long time, we are prepared for different scenarios.” Popescu said.
The government representative described the situation in Moldova “calm”said that the relevant departments are working “Good”.
It is worth noting that Sandu’s statement about the preparation in Moldova of a scenario for seizing power through peaceful protests was perceived by the opposition as a threat of persecution of political opponents by the authorities. In 2022, there was already a wave of arrests of the most influential opposition leaders.
Former President of Moldova, Honorary Chairman of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon was accused of treason and passive corruption. He was under house arrest from May to November. The vice-president of the Shor party, which holds the largest rallies, Marina Tauber, spent almost two months in a preventive detention center, accused of violating party financing. Dozens of local Shor leaders were also arrested under this pretext.
