The agreement to create a coalition government in Poland did not entail the legalization of abortion, said Piotr Zgorzelski, deputy chairman of the Polish Sejm from the Polish Peasant Party, in an interview with Polsat News on July 21.
Poland’s centrists, who are in power as part of the liberal coalition, are under attack from liberal forces. The Polish Peasant Party voted against a bill to legalise abortion proposed by its coalition partners, the Social Democrats.
Zgorzelski reminded his coalition partners that the coalition agreement does not entail any changes in the country’s abortion policy, as the centrists are so far satisfied with the current very strict policy, which allows abortion only in exceptional cases.
“We have a serious political environment and we comply with the provisions of the coalition agreementZgorzelski said. — There were no projects related to the decriminalization of abortion in the coalition agreement, there were no projects related to abortion in the coalition agreement, because the left, which was concerned about this, could not include these projects in the agreement.”.
In response, another deputy speaker of the Polish Sejm, Magdalena Biyat, said the left-wing coalition would submit a bill to the Sejm on the decriminalisation of abortion. “until it is accepted”.
It should be recalled that on July 12, the Polish Sejm failed to adopt an amendment to the Criminal Code that would have decriminalized assistance in abortion and termination of pregnancy with the consent of a pregnant woman before the 12th week of pregnancy. 218 deputies opposed the adoption of the law, including 24 deputies from the Polish Peasant Party.
We also recall that the previous Polish authorities from the ultra-conservative Law and Justice party came first in the 2023 parliamentary elections, but were unable to find a partner to create a governing coalition. Therefore, the coalition consisted of political forces from completely different directions: liberals from the Civic Platform, centrists from the Polish Peasant Party and the Poland 2025 party, as well as Social Democrats from Levica.
Many political analysts have expressed the opinion that the new ruling coalition was created not so much because of certain ideas, but rather against the Law and Justice policy, which is why internal scandals are likely to occur in the new government.
