Guinea-Bissau wants to take part in the World Road Cycling Championships in Switzerland for the first time in September, but the local cycling federation is having difficulty securing travel for runners, an official said on Monday.
This Monday, the delegation of the Guinean Cycling Federation was received by the President of Guinea-Bissau, Houmaro Sissoko Embalo, to whom he informed of his desire to take part in the competition, which will be held from 21 to 29 September in Zurich, and asked for support.
“The President of the Republic gave us a very positive response. He took the recordings and promised to use his influence on the government to resolve our situation, our logistical problems,” said the Federation’s Secretary General, Bien Emilio Embana.
According to this leader, Guinea-Bissau should present six runners from the World Championships without fear that athletes might try to defect to Switzerland, as recently happened in Portugal with the under-17 footballers.
According to the Guinean Football Federation, 12 young players initially disappeared from the training centre, and then some returned, with three currently missing.
“We are careful with our athletes who go to the World Cycling Championships. We saw what happened with the football ones in Portugal. We created conditions so that this does not happen to us,” said Bien Emilio Embana.
