The number of farmer suicides in the Indian state of Maharashtra has surpassed 1,200, The Economic Times reported on July 22.
A total of 1,267 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra, according to a state government report between January and June 2024. Additionally, 557 deaths occurred in Amravati district of Vidarbha region. However, no suicide was reported from the coastal Konkan region.
The publication also cites data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), according to which the state of Maharashtra leads the number of suicides among all farmers in the country. In the last three years, more than one-third (37.3-37.5%) of suicides among all farmers (around 10-11 thousand) in the country occurred in this state.
The publication also notes that Maharashtra makes the largest contribution to the country’s GDP.
It should be noted that in conditions of low prices for agricultural products and lack of sufficient volume of bank loans, Indian farmers often become dependent on microfinance companies and face strict debt collection conditions.
