A South African woman was arrested on Saturday at Luanda International Airport with more than 10 kilograms of cocaine as she was about to continue her journey from Brazil to Maputo, Angolan authorities said on Monday.
The 26-year-old woman, a hairdresser, was carrying drugs in a suitcase and was detained upon disembarkation while being questioned in the transit zone where she was preparing to sail to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, according to Criminal Investigation Service (CIS) spokesman Manuel Halaiwa.
“After interrogation and operational actions, she was taken to the luggage department. After her black suitcase was taken, some strange objects were found, in this case rectangular blocks of yellow color, inside of which there was white powder. After the colorimetric test When the test was done, it was positive for a drug like cocaine, blue in color,” he said.
According to the investigation, the Investigative Committee established that this was the woman’s first trip to Brazil, as she met the alleged mastermind, a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in South Africa, in a nightclub.
The man began grooming the suspect, who became his girlfriend, in January, having already travelled as a “mule” from Johannesburg to Cape Town overland “so as not to inform his family, and then, using a South African airline, he travelled to Sao Paulo, Brazil,” he said.
The SIC spokesman stressed that the woman arrived in Luanda with a suitcase containing ten blocks of cocaine and intended to pass through Maputo to reach Johannesburg, receiving a reward of 20,000 rand (one thousand euros) if she succeeded in her mission.
“With this action, the SIC has put an end to drug trafficking, which has caused great social harm in the countries, and we will continue to be very tireless in achieving our goal (…) of preventing and suppressing it. We will continue our actions to determine the actual location of the alleged organizers,” said Manuel Halaiwa.
The official stressed that this is one of the largest seizures this year, noting that several seizures have been made, the most recent of which in June amounted to 17 kilograms.
The South African citizen will appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Safeguards Judge for the application of coercive measures.
