UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday called on the Bangladesh government, which is facing massive protests on the streets, to respect the “right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly” and called for a “prompt and transparent investigation into the violence.”
Guterres’ statement, released through his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, comes after days of student and youth protests against a public employment law that have been brutally suppressed by police, leaving more than 100 people dead (174 according to local television), the vast majority of them protesters.
“We call on the authorities to ensure the safety and security of all protesters and to create an environment in which the rights to freedom of expression and assembly can be freely exercised,” Dujarric said.
