The death of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong has caused great sadness among international friends, especially the people of Cuba, former Cuban ambassador to Vietnam Fredesman Turro Gonzalez said in an interview with Vietnam News Agency (VIA) on July 22.
He called Nguyen Phu Trong a great friend of Cuba, who, as a Vietnamese leader, visited Cuba more frequently than others, five times in different positions.
He maintained personal relations with Cuban leaders, always had a good understanding of the situation in the country and worked to strengthen the feelings of the Vietnamese people, especially the youth, towards Cuba.
According to him, the Secretary General contributed to the development of trade and economic ties, the policy of the two parties, especially in the ideological field.
Gonzalez said he met and worked with Nguyen Phu Trong many times, from his position as editor-in-chief of Communist magazine to the secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and the chairman of the National Assembly and general secretary of the party. Nguyen Phu Trong has always been admired for his simplicity, cordiality, clarity and firmness of judgment.
The diplomat noted that under the leadership of Nguyen Phu Trong, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has led the country to new and significant achievements in socio-economic development and continues to work towards achieving new goals, including becoming a prosperous country with above-average income in the near future.
He also noted that Nguyen Phu Trong was also a prominent scholar whose books provided theoretical and practical explanations of the reform process as well as the transition to socialism in Vietnam.
It should be recalled that on July 19, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China Nguyen Phu Trong passed away in a military hospital due to a long illness at the age of 81.
