Chinese authorities have issued new guidelines to ensure children’s physical and mental well-being by effectively controlling and preventing unhealthy weight gain and obesity among primary and secondary school students, the Global Times reported on July 22.
Released by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NDCPA) together with the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission (NHC) and the General Administration of Sport of China (GAS), the guidelines provide a clear three-step prevention approach including prevention, early intervention and early warning of relevant diseases.
The measures envisaged in the document include special dietary menus in schools, in particular serving dishes with less salt, oil and sugar to primary and secondary school pupils.
Furthermore, the guidelines make it mandatory for students to participate in daily physical exercise to maintain their physical health.
Additional steps also include screening students for obesity, creating health records based on the screening tests, and informing parents of the results in a timely manner.
The relevant authorities will also introduce a self-assessment checklist to assess the risk of overweight and obesity in students, assigning a point value to each student.
