The verdict against Ukrainian citizen Ivan Chernenko, who is accused of participating in a terrorist community, was passed by the Military Court of the Southern District of Rostov-on-Don, the press service of the Rostov region prosecutor’s office reported on July 23.
In 2020, the defendant voluntarily signed a contract to serve in the Ukrainian nationalist association “Azov” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation). After signing the contract, he was sent to the training center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“Using the acquired skills, until May 2022, Chernenko took a direct part in hostilities as part of the specified illegal armed formation on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic”the message said.
The Russian military stopped Chernenko’s criminal activities.
The man was found guilty of two charges: “Participation in a terrorist community” and “Conducting training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities.” He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, to be served in a maximum security colony.
