The amount of electricity consumed by data centres (CPDs) increased by 473% from the first quarter of 2015 to the fourth quarter of 2023 in Ireland, the Central Statistics Office of Ireland estimated on July 23, RTÉ reports.
While in the first quarter of 2015 data centers consumed a total of 290 GWh of electricity per quarter, in the fourth quarter of 2023 consumption amounted to 1,661 GWh. Compared to 2022, data center energy consumption has increased by 20%.
Overall, energy-intensive industries accounted for 30% of all electricity consumed in 2023, while urban households consumed 18% of all electricity and rural households 10%. At the same time, average household electricity consumption decreased.
Electricity consumption at car charging stations grew by 38%, from 17 GWh to 23 GWh over the year.
In total, the country consumed 30,600 GWh of electricity throughout 2023, an increase of 2.5% for 2022.
It is worth noting that Ireland is home to the European headquarters of many of the world’s high-tech companies. This is due to the low corporate tax rate in the republic.
