Kyiv has called for “direct dialogue” with China to find a solution for peace in Ukraine. “We need to move towards a just and stable peace. China can play an important role in this area,” Ukraine’s foreign minister said during a visit to China, where he met his Chinese counterpart, making him the highest-ranking Ukrainian official to visit the Asian country since the war began in 2022. Dmytro Kuleba said he was looking for “common ground” with Beijing, Russia’s great ally. China, for its part, has advocated resuming talks between Kiev and Moscow, saying a “political resolution” is necessary for a ceasefire. “Both Ukraine and Russia have shown signs of readiness for talks at various levels,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, while acknowledging that “the conditions and timing are not yet right.” Wang called Ukraine a “friendly country.”
