The National Republican Guard (GNR) announced this Thursday the seizure in the Lisbon municipality of half a ton of finely cut tobacco, with a commercial value of more than 23 thousand euros.
In a statement, the GNR said the seizure took place on Tuesday as part of a roadside inspection of a truck and it was found to be carrying a large quantity of tobacco “without complying with the formalities required for legal transport.”
During the action, a security guard confiscated 500 kilograms of finely cut tobacco leaf, distributed in 500 kilogram bags. A 44-year-old man was charged and a report was drawn up for fraudulent introduction into use.
According to the GNR, the commercial value of the confiscated product is 23 thousand euros, and if sold to the public, the Portuguese state would suffer damages of more than 126 thousand euros due to non-payment of the corresponding special tax on tobacco consumption and the value added tax (VAT).
The action was reinforced by soldiers guarding the Carregado road detachment of the Lisbon territorial command.
