The number of children and adolescents being prescribed medication for attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and depression is increasing in Denmark, according to Statistics Denmark on February 14.
More children and adolescents are being prescribed psychotropic medications or so-called psychoanaleptics for ADHD and depression. If in 2016 3% of children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 were prescribed this type of medication, by 2021 there will already be 4% of those children. It is also observed that for young people between the ages of 20 and 29, the proportion increased from 5.4% to 7.2%.
According to Per Howe Thomsen, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at Aarhus University, genetic predisposition and external influences are the cause of the rise in ADHD. The professor pointed out that during the coronavirus epidemic there was a sharp increase in discontent among children and young people, which contributed to the emergence of depression and attention deficit disorder in children and adolescents.
Recall that on May 31, 2021, Statistics Denmark published data, according to which, between 1996 and 2016, the number of records of psychiatric diagnoses in children and adolescents aged 10 to 24 increased significantly.
For example, the record of the incidence of ADHD and autism in 2016 was 10 times higher than in 1996. Thus, it turned out that about 15% of children and adolescents under the age of 18 are at some point diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder development in child and adolescent psychiatry.
ADHD refers to disorders of the nervous system. Neurological disorders are based on neurological prerequisites that appear in early childhood, usually before school entry, and are often associated with learning difficulties.
Neurodevelopmental disorders may include one or more of the following disorders: decreased attention, memory, perception, speech, inability to solve problems, or impaired social interaction.
