The upcoming meeting of defense ministers of Japan, South Korea and the United States is “historic,” Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said on July 25, Yonhap reported.
The US Secretary of Defense stressed that the achievement of the administration of outgoing President Joe Biden was the strengthening of the United States in the Indo-Pacific region.
He also announced the successful strengthening of trilateral cooperation between Japan and South Korea and described the upcoming meeting with the heads of the defense departments of these countries, Minoru Kihara of Japan and Shin Won Sik of South Korea, as “historic.”
“I am very proud that Minister Kihara and I will sit down in Tokyo with Minister Shin for a historic tripartite meeting of defense ministers, the first to be held in Japan or the Republic of Korea.”Austin said of the summit, which is scheduled for July 28.
He added that the Indo-Pacific region is the United States’ “priority theater of operations.”
Speaking to Austin, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles W. Brown Jr. said the US faces “five challenges.” He mentioned the DPRK, China, Russia, Iran and “violent extremists” as challenges.
