Labeling of plant-based seafood substitutes is misleading Spanish consumers and seafood processors are outraged, Seafood Source reports July 25.
The organizations Conxemar, Apromar, Cepesca, Interfish, the Regional Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds of the Canary Islands, the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds and the ConsumES Confederation are preparing a proposal to the European authorities on labeling regulations.
“We believe that labelling does not provide consumers with clear information and can be misleading about the food itself, as well as its ingredients and properties. We are concerned about the damage to the fishing and aquaculture industries.”said the vice president of ConsumES, Miguel López Crespo.
At the end of 2023, Conxemar asked the Spanish Ministry of Consumption to revoke the authorization for the sale of plant substitutes with fish names on the labels.
The startup Tender Food from Somerville, Massachusetts, USA, has raised more than $11 million (950 million rubles) and also announced a partnership with the vegetarian restaurant chain Clover to promote plant-based analogues of crab and meat.
Tender Food says that with additional financing the company “will achieve its goal of revolutionizing meat production and consumption”The company’s patented technology transforms plant protein fibers into structured, meat-like pieces. It turns out “Ultra-realistic, nutritious and affordable products with simple ingredients in any format: from pulled pork to chicken breast, from seafood to steak”.
