Tony Carreira was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Infante Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Thursday at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris, France.
The President of the Republic began the ceremony by mentioning that France is a “brotherly” country for Portugal. Before presenting the artist with the award, he spoke of the closeness of Tony Carreira to Portuguese families living in France, where the singer began his career.
“This award goes to someone who, in his time and forever, was a symbol of the universal projection of Portugal, and also to someone who is a symbol of this connection with the Portuguese scattered throughout the world,” said Marcelo.
Upon receiving the award, Tony Carreira began by thanking José Augusto Duarte, the Portuguese Ambassador to France, the President of the Republic and the Portuguese people.
“I am already at an advanced age, and on the day when I am no longer here physically, I want to believe that the actions and things that I did here are more important than the music itself,” the singer said in response to Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The singer, upon arriving at the venue, spoke about the “affection” he feels for the French capital: “I started making music here, my three children were born here, I grew up here.”He also said that “it is a wonderful day” and that he is “proud” to represent the Portuguese living in France.
He also recalled the award he received in 2016 by the French state.
