FC Porto President André Villas-Boas expressed this Thursday his “unwavering faith” in the sporting success of the new season, which is the best way to repay the club members for “all the generosity” they have shown in this new stage of the club’s development.
“I have unwavering faith in this season, in the decisions I have made, in the team, in the coach, in the conditions…”, he summed up in an interview with Porto Canal at a party to present the new equipment in the centre of Porto.
The leader suggested that the participation of Porto fans, both in the purchase of annual seats and in the registration of new members, had exceeded the best expectations, so the way to justify this enthusiasm was to “maintain and increase the winning momentum”.
“We are all owners of FC Porto, because we live the same way. I am only the elected president. I and the management have a great responsibility to make Porto an even more successful and winning club, giving credit to its members, everything we are and represent,” he stressed.
Expressing his “eternal gratitude” to the past, he announced “the beginning of a new phase” for the Dragons, emphasizing the “hope” it brings to the current heroes and leaders of the Blue and White, as well as their followers.
“It’s been a fantastic growth for us and it’s been a great feeling for everyone. I hope we can repay all this generosity from the fans,” he said.
Villas-Boas thanked the municipality, the PSP and the firefighters for making the party possible in the Invicta city centre as part of an initiative that serves to “measure the temperature of the members’ will” through an emblem that aims to “expand nationally and internationally”.
“We have a unique historical club, a fantastic brand that has everything it needs to develop,” he emphasized.
He was also encouraged by the team’s presentation on Sunday against Saudi Arabia’s Al Nasr, highlighting the return home of former players Otavio and Alex Teles, as well as coach Luis Castro and his assistants.
“May it be a special day and may it materialise with the Super Cup in hand, which is what we all want,” he concluded, referring to the challenge against Sporting on August 3.
Footballer Toni Martinez has cited “very intense days” at the training camp in Austria as one of the reasons why he is “very happy to be back and reunited with the FC Porto family on the first day”.
“This is a special night for us. Let this be the start of a very successful year for the club,” said the Spaniard, who hopes to start the season by winning the Super Cup.
He left a message for the young players to “keep working, keep participating and respect the club’s symbol, keep growing and keep dreaming”, reminding them that they could be “very close” to earning a first-team opportunity by showing value.
The FC Porto party at Largo Amor de Perdição started at 18:00 with several musical performances, after which the new kit, worn by most of the men’s and women’s first team, as well as athletes from most of the club’s sports, was unveiled, much to the curiosity of many thousands of supporters.
