Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili will soon be transferred from the Vivamed Tbilisi medical center, where he is being held, to prison, the head of the Georgian Justice Ministry, Rati Bregadze, told reporters on July 25.
“Doctors are assessing his health. Mikheil Saakashvili will be transferred to a penal institution. You will find out when a decision is made.”said the minister.
Bregadze stressed that he was pleased with the marked improvement in the former president’s condition and wished him good health.
Recall that Saakashvili fled Georgia in 2013, shortly before the end of his presidential term. He was subsequently sentenced in absentia to six years in prison in his homeland. At the end of September 2021, he secretly returned to Georgia; on October 1, he was arrested and sent to a prison where torture was common under Saakashvili.
In the end, the former president went on a hunger strike and began to ask to be transferred to a clinic. At first he was placed in a military hospital and was soon returned. In May 2022, the former Georgian leader was transferred to Vivamed. He repeatedly claimed that they were trying to kill him, even talking about heavy metal poisoning.
