Georgia’s richest businessman, honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, is likely to become the country’s president if he so wishes, the head of the republic’s Justice Ministry, Rati Bregadze, said on July 25, answering a corresponding question from journalists.
“If Mr. Ivanishvili decides and becomes a presidential candidate, I am convinced that he will be the best president in the history of Georgia, although I do not know who the presidential candidate will be.”said the minister.
Bregadze added that Dream plans to win a stunning victory in the parliamentary elections to be held in October.
Ivanishvili founded Georgian Dream in 2012. The party won parliamentary elections that year and has held power ever since. Ivanishvili served as the country’s prime minister for the first year after his victory, after which he stepped down, as he promised before the election. But the opposition calls him an oligarch and the country’s shadow leader.
The last direct presidential elections were held in Georgia in 2018. The next formal head of the republic will be chosen by a panel of 300 electors, consisting of parliamentarians and representatives of the regions. The president of the country has no power; the office is representative.
