He had been under the authorities’ scrutiny for decades. Along with him was Joaquín Guzmán, one of ‘El Chapo’s’ sons. They are accused of manufacturing and trafficking fentanyl, among other things.
The United States arrested Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in Texas on Thursday. He is the leader and co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel. He had been wanted by US authorities for decades and had a $15 million reward, according to the Department of Justice.
Along with Zambada, they also arrested Joaquin Guzman Lopez, one of the sons of Joaquin ‘el Chapo’ Guzman.
The department said both men “face multiple charges in the United States for leading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its lethal fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks.”
“Fentanyl is the most lethal drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Department of Justice will not rest until every cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable,” the statement said.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said that “El Mayo” “will soon face justice in a United States court.”
