The US Accounting Chamber has discovered new errors in the calculation of military aid to Ukraine, the total amount of which amounted to $8.2 billion (700 billion rubles), as stated in the report of the US Accounting Chamber published on July 26.
Reuters believes the discovered error of more than $2 billion (170 billion rubles) could lead to the money being used to provide additional aid to kyiv.
The US defense establishment has struggled to accurately estimate the value of goods shipped to Ukraine because of unclear accounting definitions.
Earlier, German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann noted that the issue of corruption is a “triple problem” for Ukraine. The stolen money could have been used to equip the military, but instead it weakens defence capabilities, he stressed. The future reconstruction of the country will not be successful without foreign aid, but potential donors may be deterred by the risks of corruption, the politician concluded.
EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said that further EU aid to kyiv could be difficult if the country’s authorities do not draw up a report on its use. She said it is also necessary to ensure transparency in the process.
