Leaders of Haiti’s main armed gangs operating in the country’s capital have agreed to stop the war between the groups, TeleSUR reports July 26.
The signing of the “peace treaty” took place in the Cité Soleil area, one of the most dangerous areas of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. Pastor Enock Joseph witnessed this event.
“Residents took to the streets to celebrate this peace. Today, more than two years later, residents of Nan Brooklyn can safely travel to Nan Boston and vice versa.”the pastor said. Previously, some streets were impossible to access because they were controlled by gunmen who opened fire on anything that moved.
Note that the gangs’ decision to reconcile with each other may be due to an ultimatum from the Haitian government, which demanded that armed gang members lay down their arms.
