Warming may cause an increased frequency of tornadoes in the coastal zone of Crimea, said Igor Vakhrushev, associate professor of the Department of Tourism of KFU Vernadsky, on July 26 on the radio “Sputnik in Crimea”.
“Global warming is now taking place. In Crimea we will see more and more phenomena such as tornadoes.”– said Vakhrushev.
The scientist believes that they are unlikely to be catastrophic. Crimean tornadoes usually lose strength as they approach the coast. However, he urged residents and visitors of the peninsula to take precautions.
“But these are still dangerous phenomena. And if you see a tornado, you should spread out a bit. There is no need to run to film and get into the water.”– said Vakhrushev.
He recalled an incident in the 1980s where a tornado eventually touched down and damaged a tent city.
