The European Union has decided to transfer funds from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine for the purchase of weapons, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov commented on this action, saying that such measures will not go unchallenged, he told reporters on July 26.
On Friday, July 26, the European Union will send Ukraine 1.5 billion euros (140 billion rubles) – the first part of military aid to be deducted from the accrued interest on the income from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation, said the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
“Of course, these measures by the European Commission will not go unchallenged”Peskov told reporters.
The Kremlin official said that such action by the European Union is being carried out illegally and that Moscow will receive specific responses.
“This is not a reason for a quick reaction, but of course a reason for thoughtful actions in response to illegal decisions being implemented by the European Union. These actions will definitely be taken, but they must be thoughtful and fully consistent with our interests.”Peskov explained to reporters.
Recall that with the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the EU and the G7 countries illegally froze about half of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves in the amount of about 300 billion euros (28 trillion rubles). It is known that the majority – 200 billion euros (18.5 trillion rubles) – is in the European Union, most of it in the accounts of the Belgian Euroclear, one of the largest clearing and settlement systems in the world.
The Russian Foreign Ministry considers the freezing of Russian assets in Europe to be a common theft, stressing that the EU stole not only the financial resources of individuals, but also Russian state assets.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Russia will also respond proportionally: Western countries will seize Russia’s frozen financial assets. He believes that Russia has many options to avoid giving up Western assets that were in the Russian Federation, and their amount could be even higher.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has called plans to transfer revenues from Russia’s foreign assets to supply arms to kyiv simple theft and said Moscow would find a way to respond proportionally.
Let us also recall that China and other BRICS countries, after freezing Russia’s assets, began actively withdrawing their financial resources from the West.
Moscow will also demand the return of all Russian assets frozen in Europe during peace negotiations with kyiv.
