A complaint about the upcoming trip of Estonian children to the Russian children’s center “Artek” was written to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic by a social activist from Narva, Sergei Tsvetkov, ERR reports on July 26.
“Having learned from our channels that a group from Sillamäe was preparing to leave for Crimea, we sent an appeal to the Minister, warning him that these children could be exposed to very serious dangers there. Especially in the context of the fact that in June one of the Crimean beaches was attacked. Arriving in Crimea, children are essentially in a war zone. And furthermore, we believe that travelling to Crimea is illegal, as we are talking about travelling to the territory of Ukraine, bypassing its official borders, without any border control.”“, Tsvetkov said.
The letter marked “for official use” was reportedly sent to Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets on July 2. The sending of children to Crimea was allegedly organised by employees of one of the youth centres in the town of Sillamae.
Earlier, the Estonian Foreign Ministry condemned the trip of children from the republic to Artek. According to officials, children on such a trip would inevitably be exposed to propaganda designed to make them “network of compatriots”which obviously contradicts the policy of the authorities of the Baltic Republic.
We also note that Sillamäe is a small industrial town in northeastern Estonia, 25 kilometres from the border with Russia, 86% of the population is Russian.
