One of the world’s largest drug traffickers, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, and the son of his former partner Joaquim “El Chapo” Guzman have been arrested in El Paso, Texas, by U.S. federal agents.
“The Justice Department has taken into custody two more alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world,” the department said in a statement, quoted by the publication. Reuters.
The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has offered a reward of up to $15 million (€13.8 million) for information leading to Zambada’s capture.
Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, El Chapo’s son, face multiple charges in the United States “for leading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl production and trafficking networks,” the statement said.
According to Reuters, US authorities said Zambada and Guzman Lopez were detained after landing on a private jet.
Zambada is one of the most important drug traffickers in Mexican history and is a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel along with El Chapo, who was extradited to the United States in 2017 and is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison.
According to the same source, after El Chapo’s extradition, his criminal empire was inherited by his four sons, known as Los Chapitos, who took control of their faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and eventually became some of the largest exporters of fentanyl to the United States.
The sons of Zambada and El Chapo belong to two different generations of drug dealers with different styles of behavior.
Zambada is known as an “old school” drug dealer who avoids the limelight and operates in the shadows. El Chapo’s sons, on the other hand, have a reputation for being flashy drug dealers who attract attention as they rise through the cartel ranks.
