Iran on Friday rejected Israeli accusations that it was involved in the sabotage of train lines in France or that it was planning to attack the Israeli delegation to the Paris Olympics, saying they were intended to distract attention from the “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
“The accusations and hatred spread by the Israeli child murder regime’s minister against the Islamic Republic of Iran in connection with the Paris Olympics are a desperate attempt to distract world public opinion from the genocide in the Gaza Strip,” Nasser Kanani, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said on social media.
Kanani said the Israeli “regime’s” accusations were “more ridiculous than plausible” and were contrary to the Olympic Charter, which is based on peace and friendship.
High-speed train (TGV) lines in France were the target of sabotage on Friday, the opening day of the Games, affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
Shortly after the incident, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on X that the action against the French rail network was carried out under the influence of the “Iranian axis of evil,” and added that Tehran was planning attacks on Israeli athletes and other countries participating in the Olympics.
Katz was referring to the “axis of resistance,” an informal anti-Israel alliance led by Iran and formed by Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the Palestinian Hamas and Yemen’s Houthis, as well as other groups, especially in Iraq and Syria.
However, Kanani assured that his country will participate normally in the sporting event.
“The sports delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran will participate in the Paris Olympics with dozens of athletes and national champions,” Kanani said, wishing the French government “success” in organizing the sporting event.
Iran and Israel are sworn enemies, posing an existential threat to each other, competing for regional hegemony and waging a covert war of cyberattacks, assassinations and sabotage.
