MarketsFarm analyst Bruce Burnett saw impressive prospects for the Canadian grain crop after a 3,500-kilometer drive across the Canadian prairies, The Western Producer reported July 23.
“If the harvest period goes well, we have the opportunity to achieve a near-record crop in the prairies this year.”Burnett said. “Both spring and durum wheat are looking much better than last year, especially durum wheat.”said the MarketsFarm analyst.
Durum wheat yields are estimated at 44 bushels per acre (29.59 c/ha), or 18 bushels (12 c/ha) higher than last year. If Statistics Canada’s acreage estimates for June and the average abandonment rate are correct, then we can expect a crop of 7.4 million tonnes. “This is a significant recovery for the durum wheat crop.”“, the expert explained.
Spring wheat yields are forecast at 57 bushels per acre (38.3 c/ha), up 10 bushels (6.73 c/ha) from last year. This is a new record for Western Canada. Spring wheat is expected to reach 27.8 million tonnes, up 3.4 million tonnes from 2023.
“The biggest surprise for me was the absence of disease in the spring wheat. Given the wet weather, I expected to see a lot more diseased leaves.”“Burnett shared.
