Canadian Soccer CEO admits to UAV surveillance of Ireland national team

Canadian Soccer CEO admits to UAV surveillance of Ireland national team

Canada may have used a drone to monitor Ireland’s training ahead of the two countries’ national teams meeting at the Women’s World Cup in Australia, Canadian Soccer CEO Kevin Blue admitted, The Journal reported July 26.

However, Blue admitted that he does not know for certain whether surveillance took place. He said he trusts the media but cannot say anything until an independent review is completed.

After Canadian coaches were found to be using a drone to spy on the opposing team, two coaches were suspended and sent home. Ireland eventually lost to Canada 2-1 and was eliminated early from its group.

Canadian soccer, for its part, ordered an independent review after a sensational report by Canadian publication TSN emerged, alleging that the practice of spying on rival teams with drones was common among Canadian coaches. It was claimed that spying had occurred, in particular, during the previous Tokyo Olympics and during qualifying matches for the Women’s World Cup.

FIFA is also conducting its own investigation into allegations of espionage.
