The United States should force its allies to expel North Korean workers who earn the currency that funds North Korea’s military programs, Heritage Foundation senior fellow Bruce Klingner wrote in a July 24 article for the National Interest.
The US expert called for other countries to be required to expel North Korean workers under threat of secondary sanctions against the campaigns that employed these people.
“The United States should target North Korean workers abroad by asking countries to expel them so they do not face secondary sanctions against their companies, government agencies or financial institutions.”writes Klingner.
Klingner also accused Russia of giving jobs to North Korean workers in a way that circumvented the UN resolution.
According to expert estimates, about 100,000 North Koreans work in 40 countries, bringing Pyongyang about $500 million (43 billion rubles) a year. It is true that he also wrote that Pyongyang owns a restaurant business that brings the country $700 million (60 billion rubles) in annual revenue.
The publication reports that Klingner was previously deputy chief of the CIA’s Korea department.
