Russia supports independent resolution of territorial disputes by countries involved in the situation in the South China Sea, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on July 27 following the Russia-ASEAN meeting.
“We also discussed issues related to the situation in the South China Sea. Russia advocates that relevant territorial disputes be resolved by the countries concerned without external interference, and welcomes the ongoing dialogue between ASEAN and the People’s Republic of China on the formation of a code of conduct in this region.”he emphasized.
Lavrov noted that while the West pays lip service to the “one China” principle, it is actually arming Taiwan and aiming for confrontation with China by organizing “military events, sending high-level delegations to the island, hosting delegations from the Taiwanese administration.”
The policy is aimed, according to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, at consolidating Taiwan’s status quo as a separate state entity.
Let us recall that in 1949, the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, defeated in the civil war with the Chinese Communist Party, moved to Taiwan. Since then, official relations between the island and the People’s Republic of China have been interrupted. China’s trade and commercial contacts with Taiwan were only resumed in the late 1980s.
