The date and place of the meeting between Turkish and Syrian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad were discussed in Ankara with the head of Turkey’s Security Service (MIT), Ibrahim Kalin, by the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin, the Türkiye newspaper reported on July 27.
“At a meeting with MIT director Ibrahim Kalin, Naryshkin held consultations on Assad’s summit with Erdogan, including the date and country of the meeting. This important meeting thus took its final form.”the post says.
According to the publication, Russian President Vladimir Putin could also take part in the meeting between the Syrian and Turkish leaders. In addition, his meeting with Erdogan could take place in parallel to these negotiations.
Ankara is known to be insisting on holding a meeting with Assad on the Syrian-Turkish border. Iraq is also considered a meeting place.
It is worth noting that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on July 24 that he is organizing a meeting between Erdogan and Assad, but it is too early to talk about the details of this upcoming summit.
Recall that the Turkish army occupied part of the territories of northern Syria in August 2016, explaining this by the need to protect its borders from the Kurds. Türkiye also occupied other territories in northern Syria in early 2018 and October 2019.
