The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in South Korea has increased 3.5-fold over the past four weeks, KBS World reported on July 26.
The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations rose from 63 in the fourth week of June to 225 in the third week of July, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
By age, people over 65 years of age account for 65% of hospitalized cases.
The COVID-19 detection rate is also increasing, standing at 17% as of the third week of this month, up 10.5% from last month.
The KDCA explained that increased use of air conditioning in summer, coupled with a lack of indoor ventilation, creates an environment where respiratory infections are more likely to spread, while the summer tourist season leads to increased contact between people.
