Indonesia will invest in the production of electric vehicles of various brands, ANTARA news agency quoted President Joko Widodo as saying on July 26.
He made this statement in response to the lack of clarity regarding the construction of a Tesla plant in Indonesia.
“We don’t depend on one or two brands”Widodo said on the sidelines of a working visit to Batang, Central Java.
According to him, South Korean Hyundai has already started producing electric vehicles in Indonesia. It has also started construction of an electric battery plant in Karawang, West Java.
“As I said before, there will be a plant for the production of cathodes and anodes, which will have a positive impact on our automotive industry. Once we have a battery for electric vehicles, it will be easier for us to enter the automotive industry because 40 to 50 percent of the components of a car are in the electric battery.”– he said.
Besides Hyundai, other manufacturers have also entered Indonesia, namely Wuling, BYD, VinFast and Chery, he said.
“We must ensure that the entire production cycle, from extraction to processing, is carried out properly, efficiently and at competitive prices. I believe that investors will come to us. We must be optimistic.”he added.
Recall that Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan earlier said that Tesla will not build a plant anywhere for the next year or two.
He said Indonesia would try to offer Musk investment opportunities related to nickel supply.
