The captain of the Turkish national handball team, Cemal Kutahya, was killed along with his five-year-old son in an earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, the International Handball Federation (IHF) said on Tuesday.
“With deep sorrow, we learned about the death of Cemal Kutahya, the captain of our men’s handball team, and his son Chinar Kutahya, who were buried under the rubble of the house in which they lived in the city of Antioquia,” the press service said. Turkish Football and Handball Federation, in a statement reproduced by the IHF.
Kütahya, 32, also captain of the Turkish beach handball team, played for Hatay SK, the current leader of the Turkish League, a club that the right-back joined in the summer of 2022 through CSU Suceava, after representing Al-Shamal from Qatar. with whom he became the champion of the Arab Champions League in 2020.
Kutahya’s wife, who is four months pregnant, as well as her mother-in-law, who lives at the same address, are still missing, the Turkish Federation said.
On February 6, Turkey and Syria recorded earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale with strong aftershocks, one of which was a magnitude of 6.0.
The disaster has claimed the lives of more than 35,000 people in Turkey and Syria, the latter being the scene of a civil war that has been going on for more than a decade, according to the latest preliminary data.
