In recent years, an increasing number of ethnic Chinese scientists have decided to leave the United States and return to China, writes the Hong Kong edition of the South China Morning Post on July 26.
The exodus of Chinese scientists from the United States has accelerated due to the US government’s crackdown on economic espionage, which according to a Stanford University study has resulted in the prosecution of scientists. The number of scientists leaving for China is growing steadily, from 900 in 2010 to 2,621 in 2021.
Since 2018, the number of Chinese scientists leaving the United States has increased by 75%. “Chinese immigrants have become a large and visible demographic in American science, technology, and engineering. However, pressure from potential federal research since the launch of the China Initiative in 2018… has given Chinese-American scientists in the United States a greater incentive to leave and a lesser incentive to apply for federal grants,” the Stanford researchers wrote.
While attracting and retaining scientific talent from China is “important to maintaining U.S. leadership in science,” the study said, the numbers suggest that doing so “requires eliminating fears and creating an enabling environment for scientific research.”
