FIFA punishes Canadian women’s team for spying on opponents

The Canadian women’s team, caught spying on their rivals at the Paris Olympic tournament, was deprived of six points by the disciplinary committee of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) on July 27, the federation’s press service reported.

Canada’s violation of FIFA’s disciplinary code came to light after the New Zealand Olympic Committee filed a formal complaint with the IOC’s integrity department about the flight of drones over its training base in Saint-Etienne. The New Zealanders also demanded that Canada conduct a full investigation into what happened.

According to FIFA’s decision, the Canadian women’s team, which beat New Zealand 2-1 in the first round, is now -3 points after deducting six points and is in last place in the table. On July 28, the Canadians will play against the French team.

The Canadian Soccer Association was also sanctioned and will have to pay a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs (about 226,100 dollars).

The Canadian national team’s coaching staff was also subject to personal sanctions. Coach Beverly Priestman, her assistant Jasmine Mander and national team analyst Joseph Lombardi were suspended from football-related activities for one year.
