The German CDU/CSU bloc has every chance of winning more than 35 percent of the vote in the upcoming federal elections and becoming the strongest parliamentary group, CDU leader Friedrich Merz said in an interview with the newspaper Welt am Sonntag on July 27.
“We want to become the strongest parliamentary group. If possible, we only need one coalition partner. And we should be able to choose between at least two parliamentary groups in the Bundestag with which we will cooperate if necessary.”the German politician stated.
According to Merz, the party alliance currently has 32 percent support and as soon as important personnel decisions are made, the CDU will achieve new successes. The CDU chief said that by “personnel decisions” he meant the still unresolved question of the candidacy for chancellor in the Bundestag elections.
“First of all, the leaders of the two parties will make a joint proposal. Then we will also discuss it with the presidents of the territorial councils.”said Mertz.
