In June, the Republican National Guard rescued 39 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of Almeria in Spain, during a patrol under the auspices of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), the GNR reported on Sunday.
In a statement, the GNR said that “through the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF), with the help of the coastal patrol boat (LPC) Bojador, it rescued 39 migrants” on three boats on June 25 off Cabo Gata, southwest of Almeria, in Spain.
“On alert from the Spanish authorities, the Guard soldiers immediately sent the LPC Bojador to a small rubber boat with 13 people on board, and they were rescued in safe conditions. Then two more vessels were found with eight and 18 people on board, respectively, and the intermediary was identified,” the statement said.
“After the rescue operations were completed, the LPC Bojador headed to the port of Almeria with 39 migrants on board, all men, who were handed over to the competent authorities in complete safety. Three vessels were confiscated and towed to the port of Almeria. The port of Almeria and the intermediary were detained,” the statement said.
The GNR, through its Coastal Control Unit, is participating in Operation INDALO 2024, which runs from 12 June to 7 August 2024 under the auspices of FRONTEX.
Since 2021, according to the note, “Bojador has taken part in several search and rescue missions, contributing to the detection and rescue of hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, in collaboration with other forces, namely the Civil Guard in Spain, as well as the Guardia di Finanza and Guardia Costiera, both from Italy,” the statement emphasized.
Operation INDALO 2024, under the auspices of FRONTEX, according to the note, is being carried out “within the framework of operational coordination at the external borders of the European Union (EU), the main tasks of which are actions in the field of border surveillance, control of illegal immigration flows, the fight against cross-border crime, strengthening European cooperation at the level of the coast guard and support for search and rescue operations.”
