A 52-year-old man was arrested in Marinha Grande, Leiria district, for approaching drivers posing as police officers, PSP reported Sunday.
In a statement, the PSP said the fake police officer was arrested at 11pm on Saturday following a phone call to the Marinha Grande police station reporting that on Largo 5 de Utubro “there was a man in poor shape, wearing a short-sleeved jacket and a police cap and that he was approaching and inspecting vehicles.”
“A PSP officer immediately went to the scene, approached the suspect and confirmed that he was not a police officer, so an arrest warrant was issued for him,” he added.
According to a witness, whose identity has been established, “the suspect was having an incoherent conversation with the drivers.”
The suspect, who has a criminal record, was found to be wearing a short-sleeved polo shirt, a cap, a chief’s badge and a police badge – all original police items.
PSP Marinha Grande is taking steps to establish the origin of the uniform parts and is calling on drivers who were approached by the fake police officer to come to their offices to provide more details about the approach.
