Lebanon can avoid war if Hezbollah forces are withdrawn from its borders in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein said on the social networking site H.R. on July 28.
“The only way for the world to avoid a full-scale war, which would be devastating for Lebanon, is to force Hezbollah to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701. We are now in the final minutes to do so through diplomatic means.”the official wrote.
UNSCR 1701, cited by Marmorstein, calls for the complete demilitarization of the area south of the Litani River, leaving only UN peacekeepers and the regular Lebanese army there.
It should be noted that a recent rocket attack from Lebanon on the town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of 12 people, mostly children and teenagers, and 19 others were injured. Israel blamed Beirut and Hezbollah for the incident. However, Hezbollah denies any involvement in the attack. The incident is linked to the downing of an Israeli interceptor missile.
Recall that tensions between the countries increased after the start of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip in October last year, as a result of which both sides – the IDF and Hezbollah – shelled each other’s positions on a daily basis.
