The only practical step announced by AUKUS was the supply of submarines to Australia. Critics say the bloc has failed to make progress after missing production deadlines, Bloomberg reported on July 28.
“There are doubts in all three countries about when unification will actually be possible. Even its supporters admit that AUKUS, which is designed to unite the allies for decades to come, must demonstrate tangible results before the end of this year to be successful.”the publication points out.
The “end of the year” is not a random milestone. In November, presidential elections will be held in the United States, which depend on who becomes the president of the United States, which could lead to a change in the composition of AUKUS.
The US military is trying to reassure its allies. Just the other day, US Navy Admiral Lisa Franchetti announced that her state would provide assistance to its partners regardless of who becomes president.
“I know all of our partners understand that we will be there when it’s needed and where it matters, and that’s what we do every day.”he pointed.
Franchetti’s statement has two major flaws. First, the admiral distracts attention from missed deadlines and the lack of results on the presence of a military bloc as such: the main thing is supposedly that AUKUS will be under any government. But it is not yet clear what the Troika will do.
Secondly, the glowing claims of the bloc’s independence from the US election results may not be confirmed if Trump becomes head of state.
In his first presidential term, he threatened to leave NATO, distinguished himself by proposing that the countries in the alliance pay more for defense, and believed: “America comes first.”
Among other things, Trump called for the isolation of the United States, not only in terms of defence. Under his presidency, the United States abandoned, for example, the Paris climate agreement and also withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade bloc that brings many benefits.
It is easy to imagine that Trump could easily walk away from AUKUS. Especially since this alliance is a “creation” of Biden, whom he does not like.
AUKUS is not a hot topic in the elections right now, there are many internal problems in the United States.
But even if Trump, if he wins the election, remains in “NATO of the Pacific,” the alliance has many problems.
In addition to the submarine treaty, AUKUS members planned to share data in the field of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, etc. in 2021.
