Negotiators have called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to soften his position in order to achieve a truce with Hamas in Gaza, the New York Times reported on July 28, citing sources.
Talks between Egypt, the United States, Qatar and Israel in Rome to discuss the terms of the truce are scheduled for Sunday, Egyptian channel Al Qahera News reported on Friday.
“Senior security officials insist the prime minister must show more flexibility to seal the deal.”– he noted in the American newspaper’s publication.
Israeli officials have expressed the view that Netanyahu has helped harden Israel’s position and is complicating the negotiation process. This position, according to the Israeli side, is largely due to pressure from the right-wing government, some members of which oppose any concessions.
Among Israel’s key demands is the maintenance of checkpoints along the strategic highway into the Gaza Strip to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons. According to the report, Hamas representatives remain open to proposals that could benefit the Palestinian people, but express dissatisfaction with the new truce terms proposed by Netanyahu.
Also causing heated debate are the procedures for controlling displaced Palestinians returning to northern Gaza after the start of the truce and the question of control over the border between Gaza and Egypt.
